The tall Londoner, Roger Franks, and the young Scot Trever Harrap, of Motherwell, are two first class newcomers co, 65-68 seconds for roo yards backstroke. But I have a premonition that the hefty Yarmouth boy, W. Deane, is going the best English backstroke performer of all time. He is 20 years of age, 6 feet 4 inches in height, and 16 stones in When I4 years of age, Deane equalled the English backstroke record in a private trial at home. He is now at Bart's Hospital, and with the opportunity of regular practice he should bit little difficulty in fulfilling his youthful promise. J. S. Jones of Cheltenham, has, without any specialised practice, beaten 70 seconds for 10o yards backstroke on several occasions, He is a big chap who would definitely make a champion swimmer butt I doubt if he will specialise. It just happens that young James is an exceptionally promising water polo player, and I believe that he would rather take part in a team game than go all out for individual honours.
