The Award of Merit, instituted in 1908, is an accepted award for advanced training, requiring a high degree of skill in life saving and watermanship. It is designed to promote the intelligent application of life saving, swimming, first aid and water safety knowledge in an emergency situation. The recipient is subjected to rigorous training to enable him to deal with the many problems which might be encountered in effecting a water rescue.
