Swimming Medals To Major Ben Chapman D.S.O. Life President Norfolk Korean Veterans.

The following is an extract from the citation for the award of Major Chapman's DSO: Found in History Of The Royal Norfolk Regiment 1951-69. Volume IV.

On the night 26/27 inn patrol unwittingly entered a minefield, the markings of which had been destroyed by shell and mortar fire. One of the patrol set off a mine which killed five men outright and wounded three others. On receiving information of this, Major Chapman immediately volunteered to take out a rescue party.

On arrival at the scene of the incident he went forward alone, and in the very high and thick undergrowth located the casualties in the minefield. When be had established a path clear if mines he called forward singly his stretcher parties and then he personally carried out the dead and wounded one by one to the waiting stretcher party. Throughout this operation the courage, leadership and coolness displayed by Major Chapman was of the highest order.

For his consistent example of untiring energy and devotion to duty, for his great personal bravery, for his outstanding qualities as a leader, which, at all times, have been a source of inspiration to those whom he commands, Major Chapman richly deserves recognition.
